Shoja Azari is an Iranian-American artist, filmmaker, and photographer. He is best known for his photography, which often focuses on the Iranian diaspora and the effects of war and displacement on the Iranian people. He has exhibited his work in galleries and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He has also directed several short films, including the award-winning "The Day I Became a Woman" (2000). Azari was born in Shiraz, Iran, and moved to the United States in 1979. He studied photography at the University of California, Los Angeles, and received his MFA in photography from the California Institute of the Arts. He has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the California Institute of the Arts. Azari's work has been featured in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Wall Street Journal. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and the California Community Foundation Fellowship.

Azari was born in Shiraz, Iran. He is ethnically Persian, despite the last name. Azari trained as a filmmaker in New York in the 1970s before returning to Iran for the Revolution in 1979. He then permanently returned to the U.S. In 1997, he first met artist Shirin Neshat when she was assembling a team to create her first video “Turbulent”. Azari and Neshat became artistic and romantic partners.
