He has also directed several documentaries, including the award-winning La Terra Trema (1968). Agosti was born in Brescia, Lombardy, Italy, on 23 March 1938. He studied at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, and began his career as an editor in the late 1950s. He made his directorial debut with La Notte Brava in 1959. Agosti's most acclaimed film is Il Conformista (1970), which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He also directed the controversial La Grande Bouffe (1973), which was banned in several countries due to its explicit sexual content. Agosti has also directed several documentaries, including the award-winning La Terra Trema (1968). He has also written several books, including the autobiographical Il Mio Cinema (My Cinema, 2005).
