Sofka Popova is a Bulgarian sprinter who was born on 15 August, 1953 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. She is best known for her success in the 400m sprint, having won the gold medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. She also won a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay at the same Olympics. Popova began her career as a sprinter in the early 1970s, competing in the 400m and 800m events. She won her first major international medal in 1977, when she won the bronze medal in the 400m at the European Athletics Championships in Prague. She went on to win the gold medal in the 400m at the 1979 European Athletics Championships in Prague, and then the gold medal in the 400m at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Popova retired from competitive athletics in 1982, and has since become a coach and mentor to young athletes. She is currently the head coach of the Bulgarian national athletics team. Popova is married to former Bulgarian sprinter and Olympic gold medalist, Nikolay Popov. They have two children together.
