Sol Encel was born in Australia on 3 March 1925. He was a prominent Australian economist and academic. He was a professor of economics at the University of Sydney from 1965 to 1990. He was also a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago. Encel was a prolific writer and published numerous books and articles on economics. He was a strong advocate of free trade and economic liberalization. He was also a strong supporter of the Australian Labor Party. Encel was a member of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences and the Australian Academy of the Humanities. He was awarded the Order of Australia in 1988 for his services to economics. Encel was married to his wife, Ruth, for over 60 years. He had two children, a son and a daughter. He passed away on 28 August 2010 at the age of 85.
