He is best known for his books on the history of the hotel industry, including Great American Hoteliers: Pioneers of the Hotel Industry (2012), Built To Last: 100+ Year-Old Hotels in New York (2013), and Hotel Mavens: Lucius M. Boomer, George C. Boldt and Oscar of the Waldorf (2014). Turkel was born in The Bronx, New York, on 2 September 1925. He attended City College of New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1947. He then went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Hotel Administration from Cornell University in 1948. Turkel began his career in the hotel industry in 1948, working as a hotel manager in New York City. He then went on to become a hotel consultant, working with clients such as the Waldorf Astoria, the Plaza Hotel, and the Sheraton Hotels. In addition to his work in the hotel industry, Turkel has written several books on the history of the hotel industry. He has also written articles for various publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. Turkel is married to his wife, Ruth, and they have two children. He currently resides in New York City.
