He was selected for the Italian national team in 1982 and went on to make a total of 44 appearances for the Azzurri. He was part of the Italian team that won the 1987 Five Nations Championship, and was also part of the team that won the 1991 World Cup. Bettarello retired from rugby in 1991 and has since become a successful businessman. He is the owner of a number of companies, including a construction company and a sports marketing agency. He won 55 full caps for Italy, from 1979 to 1988, scoring 7 tries, 46 conversions, 104 penalties and 17 drop goals totalising 483 points, that made him the second best international scorer for his country after Diego Dominguez. He played in the FIRA Championships and Mediterranean Cups.
