Stephen Antonakos was an American sculptor and installation artist. He was born on November 1, 1926 in Agios Nikolaos, Greece. He moved to the United States in 1948 and studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He later attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Antonakos was best known for his neon sculptures, which he began creating in the 1960s. He was also known for his large-scale public art installations, which often incorporated neon and other light sources. His works have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Antonakos died on August 17, 2013 at the age of 86. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, two sons, and two grandchildren. At the time of his death, Antonakos had an estimated net worth of $2 million. He earned his wealth through his career as a sculptor and installation artist. Antonakos' work has been included in several important international exhibitions including Documenta 6 in 1977 in Kassel, Germany and he represented Greece at the Venice Biennale in 1997. His art is included in major international collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, all in New York City, The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, NY, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens. Among his public commissions were pieces for airports in Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Bari, Italy and two high-profile works in New York City, "Neon for 42nd Street" (since taken down) and the "59th street piece- Neon for the 59th street transfer station"(still standing). His large-scale neon installation, Proscenium (2000), was on view from January 28-June 24, 2018, at the Neuberger Museum of Art, SUNY Purchase.
