Stephen Watson is a South African poet, academic, and literary critic. He was born in Cape Town, South Africa, on 6 November 1954. He is the author of several collections of poetry, including The Krakatoa Letters (1989), The Art of Allowing (1995), and The Book of Happenstance (2005). He has also published several critical works, including The Poetry of Stephen Watson (1996) and The Poetry of South Africa (1998). Watson has held a number of academic positions, including professor of English at the University of Cape Town, professor of African literature at the University of the Witwatersrand, and professor of English at the University of Stellenbosch. He is currently a professor of English at the University of the Western Cape. Watson has received numerous awards for his work, including the South African Literary Award for Poetry (1989), the South African Literary Award for Criticism (1996), and the South African Literary Award for Poetry (2005).
