Steve Awodey is an American mathematician and professor of philosophy at Carnegie Mellon University. He is best known for his work in category theory, a branch of mathematics that studies the structure of mathematical objects. He is the author of the book Category Theory, which is widely used as a textbook in mathematics courses. Awodey was born in 1959 in Michigan. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1981 and his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1985. He has held positions at the University of Chicago, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Pittsburgh. He has been a professor of philosophy at Carnegie Mellon University since 2000. Awodey has received numerous awards and honors, including the Euler Medal from the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications in 2006, the Humboldt Research Award in 2008, and the Euler Book Prize from the European Mathematical Society in 2009.
