Berkoff was born in Stepney, London, England, on 3 August 1937. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his career as an actor in the 1960s. He has since appeared in numerous films, television shows, and plays.
Berkoff has been married twice, first to actress Susan Fleetwood and then to actress and director Joan Plowright. He has two children from his first marriage.
