Stuart Canin is a renowned American conductor and violinist. He was born on April 15, 1926 in New York City. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music. Canin has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has also conducted the San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Canin has been the music director of the Santa Fe Opera since 1978 and has been the music director of the San Francisco Ballet since 1985. He has also served as the music director of the San Francisco Symphony from 1981 to 1985. Canin has received numerous awards and honors, including the National Medal of Arts in 2002, the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France in 2003, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in 2004. Canin studied with Ivan Galamian at the Juilliard School. He taught music at the University of Iowa and Oberlin Conservatory, then served as concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony (where he was appointed by Seiji Ozawa), the San Francisco Opera, and, from 2000-2010, of the Los Angeles Opera. When he retired from the LA Opera, its Artistic Director Plácido Domingo and Music Director James Conlon announced the endowment of a permanent "Stuart Canin Concertmaster Chair"

Stuart Canin (born 1926 in New York City) is an American violinist and conductor. On December 30, 1936, at the age of 10, he performed on the Fred Allen radio hour. Afterwards, Fred Allen remarked "... a little fellow in the 5th grade, and already plays better than Jack Benny." This was the first volley in the famous Benny-Allen feud.
