Sukanta Bhattacharya was an Indian poet and playwright. He was born on 15 August 1926 in Kalighat, Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India. He was the son of a school teacher. He was educated at the University of Calcutta and the University of London. He was a prolific writer and wrote several books of poetry, plays, and essays. His works include the poetry collections Chhinnapatra, Pratham Alo, and Shreshtha Kabita, and the plays Chandalika and Raktakarabi. He was also a noted translator, translating works from Bengali to English and vice versa. Sukanta Bhattacharya was a member of the Indian People's Theatre Association and the Progressive Writers' Association. He was also a member of the Communist Party of India. He died on 13 July 1947 in Calcutta, India.
