Tarashankar Banerjee was an Indian writer and director who wrote over 200 novels and short stories in Bengali. He was born on 23 July 1898 in Labhpur, Bengal Presidency, British India. He was the son of a school teacher and was educated at the local school. He later studied at the University of Calcutta and obtained a degree in English literature. Banerjee wrote his first novel, Pratham Pratishruti, in 1921. He went on to write over 200 novels and short stories in Bengali, many of which were adapted into films. He was also a director and music director for several films. Banerjee was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1965 for his novel, Jharer Parey. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1969. He died on 13 September 1971 in Calcutta. As of 2021, Tarashankar Banerjee's net worth is estimated to be around $1 million.
