Thom Hannum is an American band director and music teacher. He is best known for his work with the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band, which he directed from 1985 to 2018. He is also a clinician and arranger for marching bands and drum corps. Hannum was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and attended West Chester University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1979. He then attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he earned a Master of Music Education degree in 1985. Hannum began his career as a band director at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1985. He served as the director of the Minuteman Marching Band until 2018. During his tenure, the band won numerous awards and accolades, including the Sudler Trophy in 2002. Hannum is also a clinician and arranger for marching bands and drum corps. He has worked with numerous high school and college marching bands, as well as the Blue Devils, the Cadets, the Cavaliers, and the Santa Clara Vanguard. Hannum is a member of the American Bandmasters Association, the College Band Directors National Association, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles.
