Thomas Huber is a Swiss mountaineer and alpinist who was born on 14 July 1955 in Zürich, Switzerland. He is best known for his pioneering ascents of difficult and dangerous routes in the Alps and Himalayas. He is also a renowned author and photographer. Huber began climbing at the age of 15 and soon became a member of the Swiss Alpine Club. He has made numerous first ascents in the Alps, including the first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger in 1988. He has also made first ascents in the Himalayas, including the first ascent of the South Face of Shishapangma in 1988. Huber has written several books about his mountaineering experiences, including The White Spider, The Big Walls, and The Last Climb. He has also published numerous articles and photographs in various magazines and newspapers. Huber is married to fellow mountaineer Ursula Demarmels and they have two children. From 1977 to 1978 Huber studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel with Franz Fedier, in 1979 at the Royal College of Art, London, and from 1980 to 1983 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (as a master student of Fritz Schwegler). From 1992 to 1999 he was Professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig and in 1992 interim director of the Centraal Museum, Utrecht. Together with Bogomir Ecker, he initiated and realised the "Künstlermuseum" in 2001, the reconfiguration of the Museum Kunstpalast's collection in Düsseldorf. Between 2000 and 2002 Huber was Chairman of the Deutscher Künstlerbund (German Artists Association).
