Aw began his career as an actor in the 1960s, appearing in several films and television series. In 1973, he wrote and directed his first feature film, Touki Bouki, which was a critical and commercial success. He followed this up with the 1975 film Xala, which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. In addition to his work in film, Aw has also written several plays and novels.
