Tom Ammiano is an American politician and LGBT rights activist. He was born on December 15, 1941 in Montclair, New Jersey. He is best known for his work in the California State Assembly, where he served from 2008 to 2014. He was the first openly gay California legislator. Ammiano attended Seton Hall University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1964. He then attended San Francisco State University, where he received a Master of Arts degree in Special Education in 1975. Ammiano began his career as a teacher in the San Francisco Unified School District in 1969. He was a member of the San Francisco Board of Education from 1988 to 1990. He was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1994 and served until 2008. In 2008, Ammiano was elected to the California State Assembly, representing the 13th District. He served in the Assembly until 2014. During his time in the Assembly, he was a strong advocate for LGBT rights, education reform, and environmental protection. Ammiano is currently a member of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee. He is also a member of the California Democratic Party State Central Committee.
