Toshinori Kondo is a Japanese composer, trumpeter, and actor. He is best known for his work in the jazz and avant-garde genres. He has collaborated with a variety of musicians, including John Zorn, Bill Laswell, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. He has also composed music for films, television, and theater. Kondo was born in Ehime, Japan, in 1948. He began playing trumpet at the age of 12, and studied jazz and classical music at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. He began his professional career in the 1970s, playing with a variety of jazz and rock bands. In the 1980s, Kondo began to focus on avant-garde and experimental music. He collaborated with John Zorn on the album Spy vs. Spy, and with Bill Laswell on the album Axiom Ambient: Lost in the Translation. He also composed music for films, television, and theater. Kondo has released several solo albums, including the critically acclaimed albums Kondo (1995) and Kondo II (1997). He has also collaborated with a variety of musicians, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Bill Laswell, and John Zorn. Kondo has received numerous awards and honors, including the Japan Academy Prize for Best Music in 1997, and the Japan Music Pen Club Award in 1998. He has also been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition in 1999.
