Benjamin was born in Saint Kitts and attended the University of the West Indies, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. He then went on to pursue a Master of Science degree in Economics from the University of Manchester. Benjamin began his political career in 1989, when he was elected to the National Assembly of Saint Kitts and Nevis. He served as Minister of Finance from 1995 to 2000, and then as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2000 to 2004. In 2004, he was appointed as the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, a position he held until 2015. Benjamin is married to his wife, Dr. Janice Benjamin, and they have two children. He is a member of the Saint Kitts and Nevis Labour Party.
