He is best known for his appearances on the variety show Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!!, which he has been a part of since 1989. He is also known for his roles in the films The Great Yokai War and The Great Passage. Sekine was born on 21 August 1953 in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. He graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1977. He began his career as a comedian in 1979, and made his television debut in 1983. He has since appeared in numerous television shows, films, and stage productions. Sekine is married to actress and singer Yoko Nogiwa, with whom he has two children.
