Umberto Colombo (scientist) is an Italian engineer and scientist who was born in 1927. He is best known for his work in the field of energy and the environment. He is the founder of the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA). Colombo graduated from the University of Rome in 1951 with a degree in engineering. He then went on to pursue a doctorate in nuclear engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. After completing his doctorate, he returned to Italy and began working at the Italian National Research Council. In the 1970s, Colombo was appointed as the director of the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA). He was responsible for the development of the Italian energy sector and the promotion of renewable energy sources. He also worked to promote the use of nuclear energy in Italy. Colombo has received numerous awards and honors for his work in the field of energy and the environment. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2002 and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2008. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2012. Umberto Colombo (1927 – 13 May 2006) was a Jewish-Italian chemical engineer, academic and the minister of universities, science and technology of Italy.

1993

From 1993 to 1994 Colombo served as the minister of universities, science and technology in the Ciampi cabinet. Following this he became a member of the Italian national council of economy and labour. He was one of the shareholders of Energy Conversion Devices and became a member of its board of directors in July 1995 before retiring in November 2004.

1989

In 1989, Colombo and fellow Italian scientist Francesco Scaramuzzi experimented with nuclear fusion reporting that they had successfully created nuclear fusion at room temperature.

1984

Colombo was the recipient of the Honda Foundation's award for ecotechnology in 1984. He was also awarded China's state international scientific and technological cooperation award in 1999.

Colombo trained as a chemical engineer and worked as a professor at the University of Milan in the 1970s. He served as the president of the Italian energy firm Eni for a short period from November 1982 to January 1983 before being appointed as the head of the Italian nuclear energy unit.
