V. Rajagopal was an Indian politician and social activist who served as the Chief Minister of Kerala from 1996 to 2001. He was born on 1 July 1927 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. He was the son of V.K. Krishna Menon, a prominent Indian politician. Rajagopal studied at the University of Madras and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He then went on to pursue a Master of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Kerala. Rajagopal began his political career in the early 1950s, when he joined the Indian National Congress. He was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1957 and served as a minister in the state government from 1967 to 1977. He was also elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 and served as a minister in the Union government from 1984 to 1989. Rajagopal was elected as the Chief Minister of Kerala in 1996 and served until 2001. During his tenure, he implemented several reforms in the state, including the introduction of the Kerala State Electricity Board and the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation. Rajagopal was also a social activist and was involved in several social causes, including the promotion of education and health care in rural areas. He was also a strong advocate of environmental protection and was instrumental in the establishment of the Kerala State Pollution Control Board.
