He attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with a degree in political science. White served in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war, he returned to Minnesota and began a career in politics. He was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1966 and served until 1974. He then served in the Minnesota Senate from 1974 to 1982. White was a strong advocate for civil rights and was a leader in the passage of the Minnesota Human Rights Act of 1975. He also worked to pass legislation to protect the environment and to improve the quality of life for all Minnesotans. White is married to his wife, Mary, and has two children.
