He then went on to teach at the University of Bergen and the University of Trondheim. Vigerust has been awarded several prestigious awards for his work, including the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature in 1965, the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1975, and the Norwegian Booksellers' Prize in 1981.
