Vern Gardner was an American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Minneapolis Lakers and the Fort Wayne Pistons. He was born on May 14, 1925 in Afton, Wyoming. Gardner attended the University of Wyoming, where he was a two-time All-American and led the Cowboys to the NCAA Final Four in 1946. He was drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers in the 1948 NBA Draft and played for the team for two seasons. He was then traded to the Fort Wayne Pistons, where he played for three seasons. Gardner was a two-time NBA All-Star and was named to the All-NBA Second Team in 1951. He averaged 11.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in his NBA career. Gardner retired from basketball in 1953 and returned to Wyoming, where he worked as a rancher and a coach. He was inducted into the Wyoming Sports Hall of Fame in 1975. Gardner passed away on April 8, 2018 at the age of 92.

Following his retirement from the BAA, Gardner became a high school coach and teacher, first at his alma mater Star Valley High, then at Bonneville High School in Ogden, Utah. Gardner died of a stroke on August 26, 1987.

1949

After the completion of his college career, Gardner was selected in the first round of the 1949 BAA draft by the Philadelphia Warriors. Gardner played three seasons for the Warriors, averaging 8.9 points per game over his career.

1947

Vern Gardner was a 6'5 forward/center who played at Star Valley High School in Afton, Wyoming and played collegiately at the University of Utah, where he was a second team consensus All-American in 1947 and 1949. Gardner led the Utes to the NIT championship in 1947, at a time where this tournament was considered as prestigious as the NCAA Tournament is today. Gardner was named tournament MVP. His number 33 was retired by the University of Utah.
