He was a member of the Glenn Miller Orchestra and was the last surviving member of the original group. Vincent Speranza was a self-taught musician who began playing the trombone at the age of 12. He joined the Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1942 and was a member of the group until 1945. He then went on to play with other big bands, including those of Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and Harry James. Vincent Speranza was also an arranger and composer, writing arrangements for the Glenn Miller Orchestra and other big bands. He wrote the arrangement for the Glenn Miller Orchestra's hit song "In the Mood." Vincent Speranza was married to his wife, Mary, for over 60 years. He passed away on April 8, 2021 at the age of 98. Speranza married Iva Leftwich in 1948 and they would go on to have a son and two daughters. He published a book named NUTS!: A 101st Airborne Division Machine Gunner at Bastogne in 2014. His wife died on March 6, 2017.

1950

He was sent overseas with Company H, 3rd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division from Camp Shanks on board the Queen Mary, landing in Scotland later moving to England, Belgium and finally France. His unit arrived in France and would later fight in the Battle of the Bulge. Speranza spent a total of 144 days in combat.

1945

After the end of World War II, Speranza stayed in Allied-occupied France and Netherlands until December 1945, and then returned to New York, where he became a teacher at Curtis High School. For his service, he received two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars and other medals of distinction.

1943

In 1943, immediately after turning eighteen, Speranza went to the draft board. On October 25, 1943, he was drafted to the United States Army but only entered in official service on November 15. He was sent to Camp Upton in New York where he stayed until being sent to Fort Benning in Georgia where he trained for the infantry with the 87th Infantry Division, later volunteering for the Parachute Infantry, that he joined after completing a stint in Parachute School.

He graduated from high school in January 1943 and then enrolled at the City College of New York.
