Virginia Ray was an American actress who had a career spanning from the 1930s to the 1950s. She was born on September 3, 1915 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ray began her career in the 1930s, appearing in a number of films, including the musicals "The Big Broadcast of 1936" and "The Big Broadcast of 1937". She also appeared in the western "The Lone Ranger Rides Again" and the comedy "The Affairs of Annabel". In the 1940s, Ray continued to appear in films, including the musicals "The Gang's All Here" and "The Gang's All Here Again". She also appeared in the westerns "The Durango Kid" and "The Fighting Westerner". In the 1950s, Ray appeared in the westerns "The Last Outpost" and "The Last Wagon". She also appeared in the comedy "The Affairs of Dobie Gillis". Ray's last film appearance was in the 1957 western "The Last Wagon". She died on August 28, 1959 in Los Angeles, California. At the time of her death, Ray had an estimated net worth of $500,000.

Shortly after her birth Virginia Ray moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Whitaker, to East St. Louis, Illinois. From the age of three she was able to perform many popular dances of the day, taught to her by a Negro "mammy. " Virginia left East St. Louis and traveled to New York in the winter of 1920. She went to the office of Flo Ziegfield and somehow managed to leapfrog over 50 other girls waiting for an audition. She was hired on the spot. She knew a host of stars from stage and screen because many had been her sidekicks in the chorus line. She also knew actors Malcom St. Clair and Ben Lyons, and director Allan Dwan.
