He was the son of a merchant and was educated at King's College London and St John's College, Oxford. Besant wrote more than a hundred books, including novels, biographies, histories, and essays. He was a prolific writer and was a member of the Royal Society of Literature. He was also a co-founder of the Society of Authors. Besant was a social reformer and was involved in many philanthropic activities. He was a strong advocate of the rights of the working class and was a supporter of the Fabian Society. He was also a member of the National Liberal Club. Besant was married twice and had two children. He died on 9 June 1901 in London, England, UK.
