Ward Churchill is an American author, activist, and former professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. He is best known for his controversial essay, "On the Justice of Roosting Chickens," in which he compared the September 11 attacks to U.S. foreign policy. He was born on October 2, 1947, in Urbana, Illinois. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Sangamon State University in 1975 and a master's degree in communications theory from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1978. He then earned a Ph.D. in communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983. Churchill has written numerous books and essays on a variety of topics, including Native American history, the U.S. government's treatment of Native Americans, and the effects of globalization. He has also been an outspoken critic of the U.S. government's foreign policy. Churchill has been the subject of controversy due to his views on the September 11 attacks and his views on Native American history. In 2005, he was fired from his position at the University of Colorado Boulder after an investigation into allegations of research misconduct.
