Willem van der Poel was born in The Hague, Netherlands, on 2 December 1926. He is a computer scientist and professor emeritus at the University of Amsterdam. He is best known for his work in the field of computer science, particularly in the areas of programming languages, software engineering, and computer architecture. Van der Poel studied mathematics and physics at the University of Amsterdam, graduating in 1951. He then went on to pursue a PhD in mathematics at the same university, which he completed in 1956. Van der Poel began his career as a professor of mathematics at the University of Amsterdam in 1956. He then moved to the University of Utrecht in 1960, where he was a professor of computer science until his retirement in 1991. Throughout his career, Van der Poel has made significant contributions to the field of computer science. He is credited with developing the first compiler for the ALGOL programming language, as well as the first software engineering methodology. He also developed the first computer architecture for the IBM System/360. Van der Poel is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Dutch Academy of Sciences.
