He rose through the ranks of the bank, eventually becoming the bank's president and chief executive officer in 1975. He held this position until his retirement in 1985. Cochrane has also served as a director of several companies, including the Bank of Nova Scotia, the Royal Bank of Canada, the Bank of Montreal, and the Toronto-Dominion Bank.
