William Barker was a pioneering British cinematographer, producer, and director. He was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, England, on 18 January 1868. He began his career as a photographer in the late 1890s, and soon after began working in the film industry. He was one of the first cinematographers to use the new technology of the time, such as the hand-cranked camera and the panning shot. Barker was a prolific filmmaker, producing and directing over 200 films between 1900 and 1920. He was known for his innovative use of camera angles and lighting, and for his ability to capture the beauty of nature. He was also a pioneer in the use of color in film, and was one of the first to experiment with the use of tinting and toning. Barker's most famous films include The Life and Death of King John (1909), The Battle of the Somme (1916), and The Battle of Jutland (1917). He also produced and directed a number of documentaries, including The Great War (1914) and The Battle of the Marne (1915). William Barker died in London on 28 April 1920. He was 52 years old.
