William Faulkner was born on September 25, 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi. He was the oldest of four sons born to Murry and Maud Butler Falkner. He attended the University of Mississippi for a year before dropping out to join the British Royal Flying Corps during World War I. After the war, he returned to Mississippi and began writing short stories and novels. Faulkner's works are known for their exploration of the human condition and the complexities of the modern South. His most famous works include The Sound and the Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (1930), Light in August (1932), and Absalom, Absalom! (1936). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949. Faulkner died on July 6, 1962 in Byhalia, Mississippi. He was 64 years old. His net worth at the time of his death was estimated to be around $1 million.
