William J. Bratton is an American law enforcement officer and businessman who served as the New York City Police Commissioner from 1994 to 1996 and again from 2014 to 2016. He also served as the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department from 2002 to 2009. He is currently the Chairman of the global security firm Altegrity Risk International. Bratton was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 6, 1947. He attended Boston Technical High School and graduated from the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1970 with a degree in law enforcement. Bratton began his law enforcement career in 1970 as a police officer in the Boston Police Department. He rose through the ranks and was appointed Superintendent in 1992. In 1994, he was appointed Police Commissioner of the New York City Police Department, where he served until 1996. In 2002, Bratton was appointed Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, where he served until 2009. During his tenure, he implemented a number of reforms, including the CompStat system, which is credited with reducing crime in the city. In 2014, Bratton was appointed Police Commissioner of the New York City Police Department for a second time. He served until 2016, when he retired from the NYPD. Bratton is currently the Chairman of the global security firm Altegrity Risk International. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a Senior Fellow at Harvard University's John F.
