Winifred Atwell was a Trinidadian-born British pianist and entertainer who achieved great popularity in Britain and Australia from the 1950s with a series of boogie-woogie and ragtime hits, selling over 20 million records. She was the first black person to have a number one record in the UK Singles Chart. Atwell was born in Tunapuna, Trinidad, on 27 February 1910. She was the daughter of a Methodist minister and was educated at the Tranquillity Girls' School in Port of Spain. At the age of five, she began to learn the piano and by the age of seven she was playing in public. Atwell moved to England in 1945 and began to perform in clubs and theatres. She was soon signed to a recording contract and her first single, "Black and White Rag", was released in 1950. It was an instant success and was followed by a string of hits, including "The Poor People of Paris", "Let's Have a Party", "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise" and "The Skater's Waltz". Atwell was the first black person to have a number one record in the UK Singles Chart, with her version of "The Poor People of Paris" in 1956. She also had a number one hit in Australia with "Let's Have a Party". Atwell continued to perform and record until her death in 1983. She was awarded an MBE in 1975 and was posthumously inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame in 2005.
