Xavier Barcons is a Spanish astronomer and astrophysicist. He is the director of the Spanish National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) and the president of the Spanish Astronomical Society. He is also a professor at the University of Barcelona and a member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences. Barcons was born in 1959 in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Spain. He received his PhD in astrophysics from the University of Barcelona in 1985. He then went on to work at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands, where he was the director from 1995 to 2000. Barcons has made significant contributions to the field of astronomy, including the development of the XMM-Newton X-ray satellite, the first X-ray satellite to be launched by the European Space Agency. He has also been involved in the development of the Herschel Space Observatory, the largest infrared space telescope ever launched. Barcons has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, the Gold Medal of the Spanish Astronomical Society, and the Gold Medal of the International Astronomical Union.
