Xie Tieli was a Chinese film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was born in Huaiyin, Jiangsu, China, and graduated from the Beijing Film Academy in 1950. He was a member of the Chinese Communist Party and a member of the China Film Association. Xie Tieli was best known for his films such as "The Red Detachment of Women" (1960), "The East Is Red" (1965), and "The Legend of the White Snake" (1982). He was also the director of the first Chinese animated feature film, "The Monkey King" (1964). Xie Tieli was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Rooster Awards in 2002. He died on October 28, 2008, at the age of 82.
