Xiomara Castro is a Honduran politician and lawyer who served as the first female president of Honduras from 2010 to 2014. She was born in Santa Bárbara Department, Honduras, on 30 September 1959. She is the daughter of a teacher and a farmer. Castro studied law at the National Autonomous University of Honduras and graduated in 1983. She then worked as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of Justice and the National Congress of Honduras. In 2005, Castro joined the Liberal Party of Honduras and was elected to the National Congress in 2006. In 2009, she was chosen as the presidential candidate of the Liberal Party and won the election in 2010, becoming the first female president of Honduras. During her presidency, Castro focused on improving the economy, reducing poverty, and fighting corruption. She also worked to improve the education system and health care in Honduras. In 2014, Castro was succeeded by Juan Orlando Hernández as president of Honduras. After leaving office, she returned to her law practice and has since been involved in various social and political activities. 2017

For the 2017 presidential election, Castro again sought to be Libre's nominee. She easily won the primary, but when Libre formed an alliance with the Innovation and Unity Party, she agreed to step aside and let Salvador Nasralla lead the alliance's presidential ticket.

2012

On July 1, 2012, Castro officially launched her presidential campaign at an event in the department of Santa Barbara. She then won her party's primary on November 18, 2012, and on June 16, 2013, Castro was officially chosen to represent Libre in the 2013 presidential election. Castro expressed opposition to neoliberalism and the militarization of society, and she campaigned for a constituent assembly to write a new constitution.

2009

Following the removal of her husband in the June 28, 2009 coup d'état, Castro led the movement resisting the coup d'état, repeatedly joining thousands of Hondurans in the streets calling for Zelaya's return. This movement became known as the National Front of Popular Resistance (FNRP) and formed the basis for the political party Libre. Castro joined her husband in the Brazilian embassy, where he had taken refuge after returning to Honduras before reaching a negotiation with the de facto regime.

2005

In Catacamas, Castro organized the women's branch of the Liberal Party of Honduras and conducted a strong campaign in favor of her husband in the internal elections of February 2005, an occasion in which she was in charge of sub-political coordination of Catacamas.
