Yenwith K. Whitney was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. He was born in New York City and began playing saxophone at the age of 12. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. He was a member of the bands of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Benny Goodman. He also performed with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. Whitney was a prolific composer, writing over 200 compositions. He wrote for television, film, and theater, and his works were performed by the likes of the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Pops. He was also a member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop. Whitney was married to singer and actress Lena Horne from 1947 to 1952. He died on April 15, 2011, at the age of 87.
