Yostus Ruhindi was born in 1925 in Uganda. He was a prominent lawyer and politician in Uganda. He was the first African to be appointed as a judge of the High Court of Uganda in 1964. He was also the first African to be appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Uganda in 1972. Ruhindi was educated at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and at the University of London. He was a member of the Uganda Law Society and served as its president from 1971 to 1972. Ruhindi was a prominent figure in the struggle for independence in Uganda. He was a member of the Uganda National Congress and was a leader of the Uganda People's Congress. He was also a member of the Uganda Constitutional Commission, which was responsible for drafting the Constitution of Uganda. Ruhindi was a strong advocate for human rights and democracy in Uganda. He was a vocal critic of the military regime of Idi Amin and was a leader of the opposition to his rule. He was arrested and detained several times during Amin's rule. Ruhindi was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1975 for his services to the legal profession in Uganda. He died in 2002 at the age of 77.
