Yves Bonnefoy is a French poet, essayist, and art historian. He was born on July 24, 1923 in Tours, France. He is best known for his poetry collections, which include Du mouvement et de l'immobilité de Douve (1963), La Belle Captive (1983), and La Geometrie de l'imagination (1986). He has also written several books of essays, including L'Arrière-pays (1991) and La Présence et l'imaginaire (1999). Bonnefoy studied philosophy at the Sorbonne and taught at the University of Paris from 1952 to 1989. He was awarded the Prix Goncourt for poetry in 1981 and the Grand Prix National des Lettres in 1992. He was also a member of the Académie Française from 1988 to 1997.
