Zdenek Sverák is a Czech writer, actor, and soundtrack composer. He is best known for his work on the films Closely Watched Trains (1966), The Firemen's Ball (1967), and The Joke (1969). He has also written several books, including the novel The End of the World (1970). Sverák was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on 28 March 1936. He studied at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, graduating in 1960. He began his career as a writer, writing for the Czechoslovak Film Institute. He then began writing for the theatre, and in 1966 he wrote the screenplay for the film Closely Watched Trains, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Sverák has since written several books, including the novel The End of the World (1970), which was adapted into a film in 1972. He has also composed the soundtracks for several films, including The Firemen's Ball (1967) and The Joke (1969). Sverák has been married twice, first to actress Jana Brejchová and then to actress Jitka Molavcová. He has two children, a son and a daughter.
