Zdzisław Pawlak is a Polish mathematician, computer scientist, and logician. He is a professor at the University of Bialystok and a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is best known for his work in rough set theory, a mathematical tool for dealing with uncertainty. He is also the founder of the Polish School of Artificial Intelligence. Pawlak was born in Lódz, Poland, in 1926. He studied mathematics at the University of Warsaw, where he received his Ph.D. in 1956. He then worked at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. In 1965, he moved to the University of Bialystok, where he has been a professor since then. Pawlak has made significant contributions to the field of artificial intelligence, particularly in the area of rough set theory. He has also written several books on the subject, including Rough Sets and Intelligent Systems (1991) and Rough Sets and Data Mining (2002). He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Polish Academy of Sciences Award in Mathematics (1985) and the IEEE Computer Society's Computer Pioneer Award (2003).
