Zhong Nanshan is a Chinese pulmonologist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He is best known for his work in the prevention and control of SARS, and for his research on the pathogenesis and treatment of respiratory diseases. Zhong Nanshan was born on 30 September 1936 in Nanking City, Kiangsu Province, Republic of China. He graduated from the Medical School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1960 and obtained his master's degree in medicine from the same university in 1965. He then went on to become a professor at the Guangzhou Medical College in 1979. In 2003, Zhong Nanshan was appointed as the director of the Chinese National Expert Group for SARS Prevention and Control. He was also appointed as the director of the Chinese National Expert Group for the Prevention and Control of Influenza A (H1N1) in 2009. Zhong Nanshan has received numerous awards and honors for his work in the prevention and control of SARS and other respiratory diseases. He was awarded the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award in 2004, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize for Medical Science in 2005, and the China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award in 2006. He was also awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Japanese government in 2008. As of 2021, Zhong Nanshan's net worth is estimated to be around $1 million.
