Amy Wilentz is an American writer and journalist. She was born on September 1, 1954 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. She is best known for her non-fiction books about Haiti, including The Rainy Season: Haiti Since Duvalier (1989) and Farewell, Fred Voodoo: A Letter from Haiti (2013). Wilentz attended Yale University, where she earned a B.A. in English in 1976. She then attended Columbia University, where she earned an M.A. in English and Comparative Literature in 1978. Wilentz has written for numerous publications, including The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Nation, and The New Republic. She has also written several books, including Martyrs' Crossing: A Novel (2001), I Feel Earthquakes More Often Than They Happen: Coming of Age in California and Haiti (2005), and The Rainy Season: Haiti Since Duvalier (1989). Wilentz is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Whiting Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award. Wilentz's first jobs in journalism were for The Nation, Newsday, and Time. She also worked for Ben Sonnenberg's literary periodical Grand Street, in its first years. She has followed events in Haiti for many years, from the fall of Jean-Claude Duvalier in 1986 through to the 2010 earthquake and the death of Jean-Claude Duvalier in 2014.

Wilentz was raised in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Robert Wilentz and Jacqueline Malino Wilentz. Her father was Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1979 to 1996; her mother was a painter. She is the granddaughter of David T. Wilentz who was the Attorney General of New Jersey from 1934 to 1944, best known for prosecuting Bruno Hauptmann in the Lindbergh kidnapping trial. She attended Harvard for undergraduate study in 1976, and spent a year after graduation on a Harvard/Radcliffe fellowship at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, France.
