Timeline
Is the first of three John Watson portrayers to also appear in a Tolkien adaptation. Morell played Elrond in Lord of the Rings (1978) and Watson in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959). Michael Hordern played Gandalf in the BBC Radio version of The Lord of the Rings, and was the voice of the older Watson in Young Sherlock Holmes (1985). Martin Freeman played Bilbo in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), and Watson on 'Sherlock (2009)(TV)'.
As a consequence of his lung complaint, by the time he played Justice Caldwell in Granada Telvision's Crown Court (1972) he was only able to utilise the top register of his vocal chords.
He is the only actor to play Professor Bernard Quatermass to appear in Doctor Who (1963). However, Andrew Keir appeared in Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. (1966).
He was an actor, known for Ben-Hur (1959), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and The Message (1976). He was married to Joan Greenwood.
He appeared in two Best Picture Academy Award winners: The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and Ben-Hur (1959). Jack Hawkins also appeared in both films.
He had two roles in common with his The Baby and the Battleship (1956) co-star John Mills: (1) Morell played Dr. John Watson in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) while Mills played him in Sherlock Holmes and the Masks of Death (1984) and (2) Morell played Professor Bernard Quatermass in Quatermass and the Pit (1958) while Mills played him in Quatermass (1979).
Before being cast as Professor Bernard Quatermass in Quatermass and the Pit (1958), he had been the first choice for the role prior to the production of The Quatermass Experiment (1953) but had turned it down. Following Tate's sudden death on August 23, 1955, he was once again offered the role in Quatermass II (1955) but turned it down for the second time. John Robinson was cast in his stead. When Quatermass and the Pit (1958) was being adapted for the cinema, the producers of Quatermass and the Pit (1967) asked Morell to reprise his role but, for the third and final time, he declined the opportunity to play Quatermass. On this occasion, Andrew Keir was cast as the Professor.
First on the professional stage in 1934; London debut, 1936. With the Old Vic from 1938, and, again, from 1951 to 1952.
