André Previn is a renowned composer, conductor, and pianist. He has composed music for films, television, and the concert hall, and has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras. In 1939, Previn and his family fled Nazi Germany and settled in Los Angeles, California. He also worked as a rehearsal pianist for MGM Studios, where he met many of the leading composers and arrangers of the day. In the 1950s, Previn began to focus on composing and arranging for films. He wrote the scores for such films as Gigi, Porgy and Bess, and Irma La Douce. He also wrote the music for the television series The Patty Duke Show. In the 1960s, Previn began to focus on conducting. He conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He also conducted the music for the Academy Award-winning film My Fair Lady. In the 1970s, Previn began to focus on jazz. He released several albums of jazz standards and original compositions. He also wrote the music for the Broadway musical Coco. In the 1980s, Previn returned to classical music. He conducted the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He also wrote the music for the film A Streetcar Named Desire. In the 1990s, Previn continued to conduct and compose. He wrote the music for the film The Fabulous Baker Boys and the television series Frasier. He also wrote the music for the Broadway musical An American in Paris. Previn has won four Academy Awards, ten Grammy Awards, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy. He has been inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has also been awarded the National Medal of Arts and the Kennedy Center Honors.
