Andrew Strominger is an American theoretical physicist and professor at Harvard University. He is best known for his work on string theory, black holes, and quantum gravity. He was born on July 30, 1955 in England, United Kingdom. Strominger received his B.A. from Harvard University in 1977 and his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1981. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton from 1981 to 1983. He then joined the faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he was a professor from 1983 to 1997. In 1997, he joined the faculty at Harvard University, where he is currently the Gwill E. York Professor of Physics. Strominger has made significant contributions to the field of string theory, including the Strominger-Vafa model of black hole entropy, the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture, and the Strominger-Vafa-Witten conjecture. He has also made important contributions to the study of quantum gravity, including the Strominger-Bousso entropy bound. Strominger has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Dirac Medal in 2004, the Einstein Medal in 2006, and the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics in 2015.
