Anita Loos was an American screenwriter, playwright, and author. She was born on April 26, 1888 in Etna, Siskiyou County, California. She was the daughter of a stage actress and a mining engineer. She began writing stories at the age of six and had her first story published at the age of fifteen. Loos wrote for silent films, including the 1915 adaptation of her novel Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She wrote the screenplay for the 1929 film The Divorcee, which won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. She also wrote the screenplay for the 1932 film Red-Headed Woman, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. In addition to her screenwriting, Loos wrote several plays, including the Broadway hit The Whole Town's Talking (1925). She also wrote several novels, including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1925) and But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes (1927). Loos was married twice, first to actor John Emerson and then to film producer Arthur Hornblow Jr. She died on August 18, 1981 in New York City.
