Anita Roddick was an English businesswoman, human rights activist, and environmental campaigner. She was the founder of The Body Shop, a cosmetics company which was one of the first to promote fair trade with developing countries and against animal testing. Roddick was born in Littlehampton, West Sussex, England, on October 23, 1942. She was the daughter of Italian immigrants, and her father was a taxi driver. She attended a convent school and then studied at the University of Sussex, where she earned a degree in sociology and economics. Roddick began her career as a teacher, but in 1976, she and her husband, Gordon, opened the first Body Shop in Brighton, England. The store was an immediate success, and the couple opened more stores in the United Kingdom and abroad. In the 1980s, Roddick began to focus on environmental and human rights issues. She was an outspoken critic of animal testing and was one of the first companies to promote fair trade with developing countries. She also campaigned for the rights of indigenous peoples and against the use of child labor. Roddick was awarded numerous honors for her work, including the Order of the British Empire in 1988 and the United Nations Global 500 Award in 1991. She was also named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2004. Roddick died on September 10, 2007, at the age of 64. Her legacy lives on through The Body Shop, which continues to promote her values of environmentalism and social justice.
